The "Poliorama Theatre" was inaugurated in 1906 in the building of the Royal Academy of Arts and Science of Barcelona. Situated in the heart of the La Rambla of Barcelona, the "Poliorama Theatre" has played a significant role in Catalan cultural life. In its beginnings it screened the best films of the day and later between 1937 to 1939 it functioned as the Catalan Comedy Theatre. During the Spanish Civil War, seized by the CNT-FAI, it was the scene of shots fired by members of the POUM and the CNT that George Orwell described in his work ‘Hommage to Catalunya’. Today the "Poliorama Theatre" is one of the principal places for spreading Catalan culture and also for important theatre productions from all parts of the world.
